Big Band Swing weekend celebrates aniversary of NC USO
Welcome to Social Dancing for Adults!
We are back from the Big Band Swing weekend in Asheville and it was a rainy, yet enjoyable weekend in the mountains of North Carolina. This year the Swing event was saluting the 70th Anniversary of the USO of North Carolina. The USO Liberty Bells were in attendance to help kick off the celebration:
I did not know much about the Liberty Bells other than they carry the tradition of entertaining our troops. I found out that this troupe of entertainers consist of singers and dancers that have performed in Broadway and off-Broadway productions. They are meticulously chosen through a competitive audition process and a number of the ladies are former Miss America contestants.
They performed many hits from the WWII era like Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. They also performed some current day pop hits like Sway. They wrapped the show with a tribute to our troops by singing the songs for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard to a standing ovation.
They were followed by the band that we came to see, the NC Revelers Orchestra fronted by former Miss New Hampshire Lauren Meehan.
Talk about a stunning voice, she had this strong and sultry air to every song she sang. I would buy a CD of her work in a second.
Needless to say, the party got started for the dancers in the house and a few hours later when the band called last song, we were disappointed that the night was already over. I hope that they bring back the NC Revelers Orchestra next year. I would almost say that if they were the headliner for both Friday and Saturday, I could stay all weekend. Their website has song samples, so go out and take a listen.
Remember to keep dancing!
